‘Kid sheriff’ succumbs
T-L File Photo
A FAMILIAR place to Francis L. Sulsberger, who died Tuesday, was the Monroe County Courthouse as he served as sheriff for nearly four decades. Sulsberger, who earned the nicknames, “Tinker” and “Tink,” once said he liked the challenge of being sheriff. He was an innovator who gained recognition on the state level for his outstanding efforts.
December 3, 2008
F.L. “Tinker” Sulsberger, 87, who was known as the “kid sheriff” when first elected in 1948 and later became the dean of Ohio sheriffs, died Tuesday in the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The Monroe County native acquired the nickname of kid sheriff after his election at the age of 27 when he was believed to be the youngest sheriff in the nation.
He retired after approximately 38 years of service and was the dean of Ohio sheriffs at that time. The sheriff who came closest to that record at that time had served for seven terms or 28 years.

Teachers deserve higher wages
Tue, November 25, 2008 @ 1:21PM
Recently I sat down with some friends and had to listen to some of them knock down teachers and their pay scale. I understand they get a long summer break, pending which state they are employed in, but their work is more important than one thinks. Teachers are laying the foundation for the future of America by educating our youth. Educators are the ones handling the day-to-day situations with our future doctors, lawyers and law officials. As they are making decisions to prepare them for their future many, not all, but many parents are sitting back in cruise control without a care in the world about what their child is doing in school. Coaching and working with students I have continued to find students that do no have parental support. Whether they are working two jobs to provide, or living in a single-parent home many of these kids have no one to look up to. This is where teachers are playing an even bigger role in students life.

Grid Elite

Who would have thunk it? Both Steubenville and Wheeling losing in the state football playoffs on the same weekend. I, for one, did not think such a scenario was possible. Regardless, we realize both the Big Red and Maroon Knights are special athletic programs, not just in the realm of football. Coach Reno Saccoccio and Coach Mike Young have established an eliteness in their respective programs. Both are admired across the Buckeye and Mountain states. Although both came up a little short in their quests for the brass ring this season, both should be honored for tremendous seasons. We also realize both Big Red and the Maroon Knights have state titles looming in their gridiron futures.

Where are my butterflies??
Tue, November 25, 2008 @ 10:01AM
Butterflies. And no, I'm not talking about the insects. I'm talking about the sweaty palms, heart-in-your-throat, knots-in-your-stomach, butterflies. Probably the most amazing feeling in the whole world. It's the weakness in your knees when you're just about to see him, the way your heart pounds when he walks through the door ... yea, yea, it's all that crap that usually ends after the first two months of the relationship. BUT ... Even though the butterflies eventually fly away, isn't it crucial to have them in the beginning? OF COURSE, and if you don't, he's just not the one ... right??? Let's see, I've been single, really single, for the past few months now -- after two relationships in a five year period -- and getting used to the whole dating scene again is pretty weird.

Happy Thanksgiving
Mon, November 24, 2008 @ 2:13PM
The Thanksgiving Holiday is a day to share with the family and to catalog all the things you are grateful for. Nevertheless, in hard economic times when so many of our friends, family and neighbors have lost jobs, lost homes through disaster or a mortgage foreclosure, and when so many of us are in debt to the point that we are one paycheck from being homeless ourselves, some people will have a hard time finding something to be thankful for. It is sometimes hard to be a glass half full philosopher, but there are always so many things to be thankful for when you look at the positive aspects. If you are with loved ones, you are healthy, warm and have something to eat, then you are already far better off than many who will spend this day alone, in hospitals or nursing homes, or without a home or food to share with loved ones. So this holiday, I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving.

Turkey Day Sports
Thu, November 27, 2008 @ 11:13PM
Just got back from a day of feasting at two different locations. Had the normal meal with my family and then went to my girlfriend's families house for a second tremendous meal. Before, during and after the meals I sat down on the couch to watch some football. I am a huge Tennessee Titans fan and they were on whipping the Detroit Lions to improve to 11-1. I am watching this game unfold and I am extremely happy that the Titans played so well after suffering their first loss, but at the same time I was thinking why? Why are the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving every year? It's been that way for as long as I have been alive and my elders have confirmed it's been that way for as long as they can remember. Well, like most other things it's time for a change. The Lions have been one of the NFL's most futile franchises for quite sometime and they don't even have Barry Sanders to entertain anymore.
