THEY MAY not be the Pittsburgh Penguins, but the Wheeling Nailers mean a lot to our local community. They are OUR hockey team...have been for 20 years (counting the original and popular Thunderbirds.) I hope, as do the local masses, that year 21 comes to fruition for the Nailers at WesBanco Arena. Right now, that is no certainty. It has been well chronicled the team is up for sale. The Brooks brothers are hoping to sell the franchise to local interests. Reports indicate that four potential buyers have already expressed varying degrees of interest. At least two are Ohio Valley based. Deals of this magnitude take some time to be consummated. An eventual Nailers' sale is no different. But time is of the essence, two months and counting to be exact. All things being equal or close to equal, the Brooks brothers need to sell locally. They appeared sincere at the press conference last week, expressing a genuine concern for the Nailers being able to stay in Wheeling. Now the puck may be on their ice. Prospective local ownership is reportedly coming to the forefront. If that is the case, the Brothers Brooks need to make the potential local buyers their focus. Even if they have to take a little less that needs to happen. Wheeling has been good to Brooks brothers. Now the time is at hand for the Brooks brothers to be good to Wheeling.
