Would you like some wine with your water drip?

April 20, 2012 - Taste Buds
As we socially-savvy Buds do, we were trolling the headlines of some of our favorite entertainment websites. After shuffling through useless headlines about one of the fifteen Kardashians or Miley Cyrus' "bold new look" or similar boring stuff, we came across something that set off an alarm. A new "fad diet" for brides. It involves -- are you ready for this? -- shoving a feeding tube in your nose for 10 days to rapidly lose weight.

According to the article on Coastal Health Matters (there are multiple web sites with this story--all are quite similar), this is called the K-E diet, and claims that you can lose 20 pounds in 10 days. The program has dieters inserting a feeding tube into their nose that runs to the stomach. They're fed a constant slow drip of protein and fat, mixed with water, which contains zero carbohydrates and totals 800 calories a day. "Body fat is burned off through a process called ketosis, which leaves muscle intact," Dr. Oliver Di Pietro of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., said.

Then the doc adds this little gem: "It is a hunger-free, effective way of dieting." Effective? Really? Well, we guess technically it IS effective, but a 48-hour stomach bug can also net similar results and thus be deemed "effective weight loss" as well. So does that mean you're going to run out and rub your hands across every dirty bathroom floor in the area so you can catch a bug and lose some weight? First of all, ew, and second of all, we certainly hope not.

One bride-to-be mentioned in the article that she had a real fear of not being able to fit into her wedding gown. OK, Bud Shaunna is a newlywed and just went through the whole gown thing last year and would like to offer a helpful tip to this bride-to-be and any other brides-to-be out there: Buy a gown that already fits you!!! Newsflash: if you are a size 10, don't buy a size 4 wedding dress and think you're going to squeeze yourself into it by a certain date (unless the wedding is years away or you've just had gastric bypass or something that will result in dramatic weight loss between the date of purchase and the date of the wedding). But seriously, it's a lot easier to take a dress in than it is to let it out -- because there might not be enough material to let it out enough!

Do yourself a favor and buy a dress that flatters you as you are. It's your day; you're going to be glowing and looking so beautiful -- nobody is going to look at your hips or your belly or any other feature you think is glaringly undesirable. People will see the whole package. And our guess is you're going to look and feel much more beautiful in a gown that fits you comfortably and makes you feel fabulous than you will in a gown you've poured and/or slithered into that cuts into your skin and feels miserable.

So the Buds say to all the brides: Your guy chose you THE WAY YOU ARE NOW. Why some women go to such extremes to lose weight is beyond us. Of course everyone wants to make self improvement, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But to resort to something like eating out of a feeding tube for 10 days just to lose weight (that won't stay off once you start eating regular food again--just an FYI) is one of the most extreme things we've heard in a long time.
