Guernsey Grid Success

August 27, 2012 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
THE OPENING weekend of high school football always yields some surprises. Week one's biggest shocker for me was Conotton Valley's upset of highly regarded Beallsville. The Blue Devils were dealing with numerous injury issues, but the Rockets must be better that advertised. Conotton's win sets up an intriguing matchup Saturday at the Field of Dreams, as the Rockets visit St. John's, which also prevailed in its opener. The Irish used a strong defensive performance for a 14-6 win over Bridgeport. Saturday's winner will be on the fast track for a successful campaign. A St. John's triumph would almost ensure a 3-0 start as Paden City is the Irish's week three foe. WHILE THE final outcome wasn't surprising, how it got to that point was. I thought going in that Bellaire would defeat homestanding Steubenville Catholic. I didn't expect the Big Reds would be forced to battle back from 20 points down in the second half and need to toss a TD pass on the game's final play to make it happen. The comeback speaks volumes of Bellaire's resolve as well as the offensive ingenuity of Coach Jose Davis. The win also provides tons of momentum for successive games with John Marshall, East Liverpool and Buckeye Local, all winnable contests. St. John's and Bellaire have not both debuted with wins since 2005. The All-American town will be abuzz if the Irish are 3-0 and the Big Reds start 4-0. It has a good chance of coming to fruition. With both Guernsey Street schools realizing success, now we just need for the Reds and Green to open the season against each other like years ago. That would certainly add life to a town in dire need of some.
