Controversial Public Address Announcer
August 29, 2012 - Michael Palmer
Friday night football took on a whole new twist Friday night when Union Local traveled to Meadowbrook. It was a case of a Colts fan not recognizing the distinction between "Public Address Announcer" and "Play-by-Play Television Commentator." Jets fans were all talking about the bias and adolescent style of the PA announcer as he commented on the high school football game.
It is expected that the local PA announcer is going to be slanted towards the home team, that is part and parcel to the job, the problem is when the announcer is condescending and calls out individual players from the opposing team.
Comments from Jets fans ranged from, “This guy is clearly the most annoying person in football” and “He is talking smack about our players“ to “I like it.”
The majority though were upset about the comments which were deemed “rude” and “obnoxious” by Union Local faithful.
I arrived in the third quarter, but my bet is that this PA announcer read the usual pre-game announcement.
“… to maintain high standards of conduct, competition and relations with member schools.“
“THESE ARE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES WHO ARE PLAYING HERE TODAY; THEY ARE FRIENDLY RIVALS AS MEMBERS OF OPPOSING TEAMS. THIS BASICALLY IS THE THEME OF INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS – THE IDEA OF FRIENDLY COMPETITION.”
“AN ATTITUDE OF GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP SHOULD BE REFLECTED BY ALL SPECTATORS.”
I think that it would be wise of this PA announcer to take a second look at his “style” and realize that there boundaries that should not be crossed. In my opinion he but blew right on through sportsmanship and crossed the line of appropriateness.
