Best weekend ever

November 23, 2012 - Michael Palmer
This Saturday I will be on the sidelines for the Ohio State vs. Michigan game taking photos, a primo assignment for any sports photo journalist.

I have several family members, including my wife, who hate me because I have the privilege of front row seats to arguably the best rivalry in college football. Mrs. Palmer went so far as to write “You Suck!” under my calendar marked with the assignment.

Honestly, the day before is marked with the assignment I am most psyched about, photographing Ohio High School State Football playoffs.

St. Clairsville has a tough assignment facing off against the defending state champions, but at their game I am taking a more important role than at the OSU game. In addition to being the only local newspaper photographer, I am recording a significant event in these young men’s lives.

I have really enjoyed this year’s playoffs. They have indeed been fun. There are so many side stories for the post season. One that might have gone mostly unnoticed was the band bus breaking down on the return trip from Logan.

The replacement bus was dispatched from St.C but the delay in getting to and from the other side of Zanesville put the band members back home at 4 am.

Weekends like this are what photographers look forward to, while we are taking the “grip and grin” photos of the everyday news items, these highlights are sitting in the back of our minds quietly reminding us that better days are on the calendar when we can enjoy our jobs and their unique perks.

This week I also had the opportunity to craft a poster for the playoff team. In football it is tough to include everyone, but we do our best.

I have predicted wins every week for the Red Devils, this week I known they can post a win but they have to rise to their potential and play 4 quarters of smash mouth football which they have not yet had to do, which is in and of itself quite a feat. The same can be said for the Buckeyes as they face a quality Wolverine team. I will be rooting for the Scarlet and gray today and tomorrow as well.

This the final game for the Buckeyes, win or lose, so it’s up to St. C to give this junkie one more week of gridiron work assignments.

Let’s Go Buckeyes! Let's Go Red Devils!
