These are the best of athletic times in St. Clairsville. Many thought that making the Division II State Basketball Tournament last March was as good as it gets for the Red Devils. Fourteen football games later, the basketball achievements still shine in glory, but St. C. gridders have taken that lofty success to another level. Making the state basketball tournament and playing for a state grid championship in successive fashion by the same school is nothing short of remarkable. Coach Brett McLean's focused charges put an exclamation point on making the state title game by dropping 40 points on the defending state champions. Norwayne was a 13-0 formidable club, which was clueless trying to stop the Red Devil attack Friday. Mix in the recent success of the St. C. cross country, golf, track and baseball teams and it really is an athletic run that Eastern Ohio has not previously experienced. All that remains for the St. Clairsville gridders to be immortalized in OVAC circles is to get past another unbeaten in Clinton-Massie in Friday's title tilt. I cannot see the Devils stubbing their collective toes now. They have been chasing this dream for a good while. Now what was years in the making is within 48 minutes of their grasp. After viewing St. C. dispatch Norwayne in championship style, the Red Devils will be embracing the brass ring when daylight turns to dusk on Friday.
