Most of us kick-off the summer season celebrating Memorial Day with family and friends at cookouts and barbeques. But, we should spend a moment thinking about the holiday and what it means. 1. Memorial Day is not Veterans Day. Most of us confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. But there truly is a difference between the 2 holidays. Memorial Day honors the military personnel who died while serving the country, especially those who died from battle wounds. Veterans Day is to honor all members of the military both in wartime and peacetime. 2. If You're Talking at 3pm on Memorial Day, You're Breaking the Law. In 2000, Congress passed a law requiring all Americans to observe a National Moment of Remembrance by pausing for a minute of silence at 3pm. Here are a couple tidbits about Public Law 106-579: Amtrak honors the moment of silence with 200 train whistles blowing at the same time. Major League baseball stops all games for fans to stand in silence. 3. Confederate Memorial Day is a Thing in the South Nine states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas) observe Confederate Memorial Day. Confederate Memorial Day started the year after the Civil War ended and was celebrated on April 26 (the date that General Johnston finally surrendered to General Sherman). Now...the states can't agree when to celebrate the day and there are various dates beginning in spring and summer. 4. Casualties in War Throughout our history we have been in quite a few wars. If you add up all the deaths from American wars and conflicts, the total comes out to roughly 1,346,000 deaths. So please pay your respects on Memorial Day. 5. Americans Love Their Hot Dogs on Memorial Day According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Memorial Day also kicks off Hot Dog Season! From Memorial Day to Labor Day Americans will eat 7 billion hot dogs. They estimate that there would be enough hot dogs to stretch from Washington DC to Los Angeles. That is 818 hot dogs eaten every second!
