Pick up a healthy habit
August 5, 2013 - Taste Buds
Did you know that 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered with water? Good thing, because the Buds love water!
Of course water is great for washing everything and various recreational sports, but the Buds love water as a beverage - a FAVORITE beverage.
What's not to love? Drinking water holds a bunch of benefits for your body - the most obvious being water prevents dehydration. When your body is dehydrated, you can face a variety of issues like headache, low energy and digestive problems. Who needs expensive energy drinks or pills to fix these ailments? Just drink your water!
Water also helps clean your body out by flushing away toxins. Just think about what water from a hose does to a dirty car - the dirt slides right off. The Buds sometimes picture the insides of their bodies getting a nice pressure wash from the water we drink.
Water is also a weight loss tool. Many times we think we are hungry, but actually, we're just thirsty. Try this - next time you think you're hungry, before reaching for a snack, drink a glass of water. Wait 20 minutes. If you still feel hungry, then you probably are ready to eat. In addition, sometimes drinking a glass of water before you eat can help you eat less. Finally, since water has no calories, it's a lot better for you than sugary pop, juice or alcohol - all of which have lots of calories.
If you're already a water drinker, the Buds say bravo! If you're not, an easy way to pick up the habit is to get a refillable container and carry it with you wherever you go - in your car, at your desk, at home - and when you're thirsty, take a drink. Fill it back up when it gets empty and keep drinking.
How much water should you drink? According to the Mayo Clinic, men need about 3 liters (13 cups) of total beverages a day. Women need about 2.2 liters (9 cups) of total beverages a day. Keep in mind, you can also get your liquid intake from clear broths and watery fruits/vegetables.
If you're looking for a great back to school resolution (whether it's you going back or you sending your kids back), this seems like a good time to start a new healthy habit - drinking water. Your body will thank you!
