Who do you think you are?

September 5, 2013 - Michael Palmer
American exceptionalism is the idea that the United States and the American people hold a special place in the world, by offering opportunity and hope for humanity, derived from its unique balance of public and private interests governed by constitutional ideals that are focused on personal and economic freedom.

In this week's episode of “Who Do You Think You Are?” Singer Trisha Yearwood searched for a family connection; she uncovers her ancestor's history in England and learns that her great-great-great grandfather was arrested and sentenced o death by hanging for poaching a deer off of a rich member of nobility's estate. Fortunately for music fans his sentence was commuted and he was sent to be a prisoner and slave in America.

Being from England and facing the noose, one can only imagine the great joy and relief he must have felt as he reached the shores of America. He flourished in the young country where land, unlike in Europe was plentiful and opportunity for even a pauper to better themselves.

He became a surveyor and homesteaded some property offered by the government in Georgia where he became a successful businessman and property owner. Where else on the planet could this have happened for her ancestor?

There are many today who say that there is nothing special about our country. They can debate the issue with some and persuade a few, but I fear that Mrs. Yearwood would beg to differ.

The show gave some perspective on the state of the world in the 1700s and why so many came from Europe to escape tyranny and find freedom. There is just one episode left this season but it is worth a watch because most of the episodes highlight a portion of history which most viewers sadly are unaware of.

It airs on TLC Tuesdays at 9 pm. Check it out.
