The "real" Bachelor

February 27, 2014 - Kim Collette
Is this the most "real" Bachelor to date? And no, I don't mean Juan Pablo, the actual Bachelor himself. I am referring to the actual reality tv series as a whole. For 18 seasons, I have watched men and women swoon over each other, get engaged and for the most part break up months later once the show is finished filming. But, I have never witnessed a season quite like Juan Pablo's. Yes, we all were giddy when they announced that Juan Pablo was going to be this year's Bachelor. Maybe it was his accent. Maybe it was his athleticism. Maybe it was that he was not hard on the eyes. But, for the first time we saw the real man....who has a lack of interest or empathy in the women or finding "love". Andi Dorfman, one of this year's contestants, called Juan Pablo out. After the mandatory "overnight" dates, Andi was blunt and to the point. "I'm not unsure. I KNOW he's not the one." Andi confronted Juan Pablo in a face to face about all the things that she couldn't look past. Andi said he talked about other women, made no attempt to get to know the real her, and pretty much she complete lack of interest in her, even saying that she made it to the final 3 by default. In one heated exchange, Andi asked, "do you have any idea what religion I practice?" His response, or lack there of, showed that maybe in fact we all had the wool pulled over our eyes by Juan Pablo and maybe every other Bachelor or Bachelorette ever to be on the show. The truth is dating on a show like the Bachelor, as in life, is that often the person you spend a few fun hours with is not always the person you want to build a life with. Andi found out. And there was nothing wrong with her wanting to break up with Juan Pablo. In fact, I think it is safe to say that deep down everyone of us cheered when she did it! Juan Pablo still has 2 remaining suitors, and maybe he will and maybe he won't find true love. What I love is that the show finally showed someone who wasn't happy and showed their real feelings for one of the Bachelors. Will I continue watching this tv franchise? Of course.....I know the show is built on fantasy and not real life. I will watch to simply escape the real world for a couple hours a week. And you know Juan Pablo would say, "Eess ohhh-kay."
