August 10, 2014 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
AUGUST IS a month of many faces. It is usually home to the "Dog Days," but our local weather 10 days in has been rather pleasant. I heard many people say summer was over when August arrived. Far from it. Summer's not over until it is over. We got another five weeks to make the most of it. August yields excitement. Football -- at all levels -- is ramping up. The anticipation of prep football is almost as good as the real thing. County fairs spice the month at two Eastern Ohio venues. Jefferson County stages its extravaganza this week. Monroe County goes a week later. The county fairs are augmented by several local festivals and activities. Heritage Port in Wheeling holds the annual Vintage Regatta during August's final weekend while the Friendly City will also stage the Wine & Jazz Fest. Not to be overlooked is a touch of royalty when the OVAC holds it annual Hall of Fame induction Saturday at WesBanco Arena. It is a star-studded and class affair. Then there is football. Summer is far from over. Rather it is just heating up in August.
