Pirates announce signing of 20th round draft pick
PITTSBURGH -- While negotiations continued with top draft pick Pedro Alavrez late Friday night, the Pirates announced the signing of their 20th round selection, righthander Robert (Quinton) Miller. The ball club had until midnight (Friday) to close a deal with the highly regarded Alvarez, though no announcement had been made in the final 60 minutes leading up to the deadline. Should the Bucs fail to sign Alvarez, he returns to the draft pool and Pittsburgh receives a No. 3 compensation selection in next year's draft. The 18-year-old Miller had originally signed a letter of intent to play at the University of North Carolina before Friday's deal was announced by Bucs' Senior Vice President and General Manager Neal Huntington. "With the signing of Quinton, we are pleased to add another player who possesses solid, on-field ability and is a good person off the field," Huntington stated.
