Fort Frye upends River
By BUBBA KAPRAL Times Leader Managing Editor The growing pains continue at River. Coach Mike Flannery’s Pilots suffered through a 2-8 season a year ago, a campaign which saw some seven freshmen gain starting roles. In Friday night’s season opener, the Rivermen again displayed that more seasoning is still needed as they dropped a 38-14 decision to Fort Frye at Flannery Field in Hannibal. “We are still an extremely young team. Even though those freshmen got a lot of playing time last year, they are still pups. We have a lot of learning and maturing to do,” Flannery said. “I told our kids to keep working hard and good things will happen. We just need more game experience.” River dug a deep first-quarter hole it was unable to escape. The Pilots found themselves down 17-0 after the opening panel, a margin too large to overcome.
