City nestled along the Ohio River
MARTINS FERRY, whose beginnings are linked to Ohio’s earliest history, has continued to grow and now has become one of the most active cities in the Ohio Valley.
The city is near several major highways such as Interstate 70, U.S. 40, U.S. 250, SR 7 and SR 647.
Martins Ferry is next to the Ohio River, just across from Wheeling, and about 60 miles south of Pittsburgh.
The new school complex, located high on top of the hill overlooking the city, is one of the most modern and provides special programs above and beyond state mandates.
In September of 1787 Martins Ferry was established and is very rich in history with plans on being just as rich in the future.
Prior to Martin’s arrival that year, a community known as Hoglinstown or Mercerstown existed, and some consider it as the first organized and unauthorized settlement in Ohio while Marietta is the first legal organized settlement in the state.
