September 12, 2008

This year’s Pumpkin Festival in Barnesville will not only be marked as the 45th annual event, but also take on a Bicentennial theme to celebrate the village’s 200th birthday.
The event will begin Wednesday, Sept. 24, with pumpkin weigh-ins for the big King Pumpkin contest and last through Sunday, with Thursday’s festivities including the official ribbon cutting ceremony as well as a presentation of the King Pumpkin Trophy.
President of the Pumpkin Festival Committee Tom Michelli said last year’s biggest pumpkin weighed in at 1289 1/2 pounds and was locally grown in St. Clairsville.
“I think the world record is going to be a ton one of these days,” Michelli said, also noting that for each pound, the harvester is awarded $1, as well as $100 extra if it’s grown around the are.
