ATHLETIC coaches play a prominent part in the lives of Ohio Valley student-athletes, and as the number of sports increases for the area’s youths, the coaching ranks grow.
Only a several years ago, coaches for swimming, soccer and lacrosse were non-existent —  that is, there may have individuals qualified to coach these sports, but the sports themselves weren’t available on the high school level.
The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference has recognized a variety of coaches in its Hall of Fame and museum, located in the WesBanco Arena.
Eastern Ohio has produced many coaches, some of whom have gone to coach on the college, university and professional sports levels.
The photos in today’s feature mostly date from prior to 1966, and included are some deceased individuals. Not all those pictured could be identified.

WITH AN unidentified individual at left are Hayden Buckley, who served as football coach at Martins Ferry High School, and John Vrotsos, who initiated the sport of wrestling at that high school. As wrestling coach from 1957-68, Vrotsos guided his teams to seven consecutive OVAC Tournament championships and six consecutive Ohio District Tournament titles. His teams were ranked in the top 10 in the state four times. In addition to being in the OVAC Hall of Fame, he is in the Martins Ferry High School Wrestling Hall of Fame.
