Vote No Issue 2

October 20, 2011
Times Leader

Dear Editor,

This is a fictitious narrative of a mayor, politician, etc., sitting at his desk trying to persuade Americans, who he presumed lesser than him in intelligence, that he could save the country by killing unions.

If his house was robbed, he expects the police to get there pronto; risking their lives, not caring if they were safely equipped to protect themselves, just so they could save him. And, of course, they would because they are upstanding citizens. They do their job every day, with not enough pay and perhaps with not enough safety issues to protect themselves. But who care about them, he thinks. I am the important one. I am the mayor!!

He gets a call from the school that his child is getting bullied and got so scared that he threw up on the teacher; but, who cares about the teacher...he thinks, just so my child is taken care of. He thinks all the firefighters should risk their lives everyday, but they dare not fight for safer equipment; or even needing enough sleep before the next big fire... and this guy thinks he is intelligent!!!

Well, just think, the next time you need help, Mr. Mayor or politician, the people you try to destroy, still are decent moral people who would help you anyway. But they are not and never will be dumb enough to vote to kill unions. You sir, are an example of what we do not need in America. These American workers may be called the middle class because they have a lower wage. But as Americans, they are rated the highest class. They are the nurses who help save your life; the teacher who provides the knowledge so your children have a better chance of success. The policeman and firefighters who risk their lives, and the loss to their families when they are injured or killed. These are the steel mill workers who work sometimes, doubles and triples in a week to provide the steel for your cars and appliances.

Are YOU this self-centered person in this narrative who believes that your pocket will be filled by special interest if you push this vote against the right to have unions; the basic rights of every American; to protect themselves and their families???

Do we vote a person like you into office again, who has such little regard for the greatness in America? I think not. So pack up your office before the next election so you will be prepared to move out!!!

Thank you.

Mary Smith,

Martins Ferry
