SHADYSIDE - Maggie the dog was taken in by Shadyside Care Center staff six years ago in September.
She was found wandering around the parking lot by Polly Skapik, an MDS nurse and Gary Phillips, the facility's environmental director.
Afraid that Maggie might wander onto Ohio 7, the pair brought the dog into the care facility.
SHADYSIDE CARE Center staff and residents recently held the annual birthday party for Maggie. Maggie, who is joined by the facility’s newest pet Milo, is being held by resident Sally Arnold. Behind them is staff member Tiffany Skapik holding Chloe, another pet who visits residents often throughout the day.
Maggie immediately won the hearts of the residents and staff and it was agreed that she would stay. She was subsequently adopted by the facility.
Maggie visits residents in their rooms and she is spoiled by the staff and residents both, who bring her treats.
Some residents keep treats in their rooms to be ready for Maggie's daily visits.
Maggie has been trained to understand that the dining room is off limits and will not venture in.
Every year in September, to commemorate her arrival at the Shadyside Care Center, the staff and residents hold a special party in Maggie's honor.
Gifts of cleaning supplies, blankets, dog food, cat food, cash and other needed items were collected and donated to the Marshall County Animal Shelter in Maggie's name.
