The Hope Players will hold auditions on Monday, Feb. 13 and Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Harrison East Elementary School in Hopedale for "Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka." The show will be presented at Harrison East on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 6 at 2 p.m.
The musical is based on Dahl's classic children's book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and the beloved 1971 family film starring Gene Wilder, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." It retains the well-known songs from the movie by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, including "The Candy Man," which was a major hit for Sammy Davis Jr. It was adapted for the stage by Bricusse and Timothy Allen McDonald.
Those auditioning for acting roles are asked to prepare a song that shows their vocal range, and to bring along sheet music or a CD for accompaniment. According to Judith Kuryn, musical director for the production, the song need not be from "Willy Wonka," but may be. Actors also will be assigned readings from the script of the show.
Rehearsals for "Willy Wonka" will be scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 - 9 p.m. and on Saturdays during the daytime. Actors should be prepared to list any potential conflicts with the rehearsal schedule at the time of auditions.
