Scenic Music

LET THE music begin, and so it will in brand new digs in St. Clairsville.

The city's new amphitheater will officially open next week. It came to fruition thanks to a widespread spirit of cooperation, teamwork and commitment.

Recreation Director Kevin Barr reports the dedication is set for June 5 near the high school football field at the south side of the JB Martin Recreation Center.

The new facility is a major addition for St. Clairsville's already top-of-the line recreational venues. The amphitheater boasts a 45-foot deck and has a depth of 45 feet. The structure is 2,500 square feet in total.

Acoustics will be exquisite and the new shell will be able to handle any size band.

Often times, a flatbed truck was used as a stage for St. C. summer concerts. The amphitheater will obviously result in a major spike in attendance and performances.

Making the new musical site even more attractive is that funding for the project came via a land and water conservation grant through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

No one does a better job of securing grant money than Barr.

Construction took about a year. Ohio Valley Masonry was contracted to finish the concrete work and the band shell was purchased through Enwood and Dave Williams and Associates.

But the project would not have become a reality if not for the selfless effort of countless volunteers. Barr credits the First Presbyterian Church and the East Richland Friends Church for their volunteer labor.

Meanwhile, several city workers donated their time and expertise for electrical and landscaping work.

The area is handicap-accessible and entirely on level ground. It features a dressing room and a dance floor. Barr said the ease of access is ideal for community events and celebrations.

We agree. The new amphitheater is definitely state of the art, one the St. Clairsville community definitely deserves and needed.

We commend Barr and all those who helped make the amphitheater come to fruition. We also encourage Hilltop residents and those in surrounding communities to make use of such a wonderful facility.
