As a member of St. Mary's Church in Lafferty, I am heartbroken at the recent loss of my church due to the fire on May 23, 2012.
While I currently reside in Bridgeport, I still attend mass there with my family as I have done all my life. I would like to thank the firefighters and all who did everything they could to save the church.
I am sure that everyone is aware of the lack of water pressure with the nearby fire hydrant. Who knows if this fire hydrant was even functional if it would have saved the church.
I do thank God that there were no injuries or loss of life. However, in the back of my mind I just keep thinking what if the fire was in a nearby home? Many elderly people live in that area. Would they have been able to get out? What would have happened then? How many other fire hydrants in Belmont County have little or no water pressure? Whose church or home is next?
I guess maybe this is Belmont County's "wake up call" to evaluate the fire hydrants.
Too bad it came at the expense of a church that was near and dear to so many of us.
