WEIRTON - Weirton moved to a game of advancing to the Steele and Cook Insurance Ohio Valley Baseball League's championship series Sunday afternoon with a 5-3 victory over Neffs on Edwin J. Bowman Field in the Steel Town.
The defending champion Red Dons (19-3) scored four times in the first inning and led 5-0 before the A's Gang (16-8) rallied for a three-spot in the sixth.
Neither team could muster much offense as they combined for seven hits, with Neffs collecting four of them. The A's Gang also committed three costly errors.
Dane Koch singled twice and knocked in a run for Neffs.
Matt Masarick and Clay Francis had singles.
Michael Roach went the distance, striking out three but walking seven.
Steven Buffo worked the full seven innings for Weirton. He fanned a trio and issued four free passes.
Rudy Nagy had an RBI double for the Red Dons.
Koch said he will hand the ball to Fred Owens in Game 2 tonight at the old ballyard in Neffs. The first pitch is set for 6.
