Another successful basketball camp has been put to bed at St. John Central.
It was a result of the help, generosity and cooperation of countless people and businesses.
First, I must thank DPS Penn, our corporate sponsor. The oil and shale drilling firm has been very generous to our basketball efforts at St. John's. Also, thanks go to Stephon Green of Buffalo Wild Wings, the Crozier family of the Bellaire Dairy Queen, Scooter Tolzda and Jeff Lowe for gifts and door prizes. Your donations were priceless and well received by our 86 campers.
We praise our speakers for their entertaining and life-educating presentations. Lynn Ullom (West Liberty), Suzy Delany (Franciscan), Tolzda (Monroe Central), Liz Repella (Steubenville and WVU), Arin Kress (St. John Central and Winthrop) and Hall of Fame official Mike Coyne elevated our camp to a championship level.
Handling such a large number of campers at one venue would have been difficult if not for the work of Garrett Holubeck. The St. John Central junior, bidding to earn his Eagle Scout Award, completely renovated our outside courtyard and made it a first-class basketball facility, featuring glass backboards.
SJC boys' coach Kevin Lahna and his players supplied great help as did assistant girls' coach Dr. Jerry Liberatore and our girls' hoopsters. Volunteer assistance from Chris Stead and Denise Palmer was invaluable.
Lastly, assistant camp director Emily Powell was tremendous in pulling everything together.
In closing, I would like thank the families of our 86 campers for entrusting us with your children.
