THE UNITED Way of the Upper Ohio Valley is a selfless organization, aiding thousands of those in need locally.
The Day of Caring, being staged today, is a big part of the United Way success story. The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley has set its campaign goal at $777,777.
That is an ambitious figure but one we believe is achievable, knowing the generosity that Ohio Valley residents have exhibited in the past. The money raised through the campaign helps to fund its 30 member agencies.
The Day of Caring serves as the kickoff for the campaign's fund-raising efforts.
And what a day it is. It is volunteerism personified.
More than 450 volunteers, including retirees, community volunteers and employees from 34 organizations, are participating in the 21st annual event. The workers donate their time, effort and expertise to assist 25 member agencies throughout the area, performing a wide variety of tasks.
Some of those chores range from trimming trees to helping senior citizens with repairs or cleaning in their homes. The agencies taking part give an orientation to their services to the volunteers and provide lunch.
It is not a day of drudgery, but rather one of excitement, camaraderie and a sense of teamwork and fulfillment. In the process, 25 agencies who would be hard pressed financially to carry out the needed work on their own, get a professional facelift at the right price.
We commend all those organizations and companies providing the work force to make the Day of Caring a possibility. It is another example of the strong character of people in the Ohio Valley.
We also encourage all those who can to support the United Way campaign.
