WHEELING?- It will be down-home fun for a great cause when the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra holds its annual Bluegrass Barbecue fundraiser Sept. 30 from 3-6 p.m. at the Hess Shelter at Oglebay Park.

The event features delicious eats by Charlie Schlegel and Ye Olde Alpha, kettle corn by Jim Buchinerri and music from three fantastic local bands: Out of the Blue, National Pike Pickers, and Marsh Wheeling String Band.

The event will also feature a raffle with such diverse offerings as a night at the movies, a relaxing evening of candles, a fall-themed basket, and the return of last year's crowd-favorite "Lagniappe" basket, full of a variety of surprises.

Tickets are on sale now through the Wheeling Symphony office by calling 304-232-6191 or emailing WSYouthOrch@gmail.com. All proceeds benefit the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Adult tickets are just $20, student tickets are $5, and children 5 years and under are free. Tickets do not include the cost of kettle corn or raffle tickets.

This event is sponsored by Main Street Bank and Bachmann, Hess, Bachmann & Garden, PLLC.

Out of the Blue bluegrass band plays a lively mix of traditional and progressive bluegrass, in addition to bluegrass covers of rock classics. The band consists of husband and wife team of Kim and Bev West from Wheeling on guitar and banjo and vocals. Bluegrass veteran Debbie Daugherty from New Cumberland plays upright bass and also provides vocals. The band is rounded out by Wheeling Park Bluegrass alumni Carlton Ferrell on fiddle and Joe King on mandolin.

Marsh Wheeling String Band describes themselves as "High-energy, toe-tappin', old-time string band music from the heart of Appalachia and the old south, a touch of bluegrass, and a few other tunes they've picked up along the way..." They have been seen at Oglebayfest, Mountain Moon Coffeehouse, Wheeling Jamboree, and Pennyroyal Opera House. Members of Marsh Wheeling String Band are Carter Kenamond - Banjo, Vocals, Bass; Justin Kiger - Bass, Banjo, Vocals; Melissa Potter - Fiddle, Vocals; Paul Redilla - Mandolin, Guitar, Vocals; Chris Wack - Guitar, Vocals

The National Pike Pickers are John Angius, guitar; Dave Visnic, fiddle; Jim Simpson, mandolin, and Jeff Strautmann, doghouse bass. Former Short Crick Flatpickers, John, Dave and Jeff have performed together in the Wheeling area for over 30 years. In 2011, the three joined with Jim Simpson, who has performed in several Philadelphia area bands and recently in the local favorite The Cabin Fever Band.

The Pickers bring a traditional bluegrass style mixed with a few surprises to the Greater Ohio Valley. Their fresh sets include songs by as diverse a group of writers and performers as the Bee Gees and John Prine, Flatt and Scruggs and Johnny Cash. And Bill Cheatham, Big Scioty, The Orange Blossom Special and Ragtime Annie are represented in new arrangements, too. The National Pike Pickers are for audiences that ask more of their bluegrass.
