SNIDER, Charles W. "Chuck," 88, died Friday, October 5, 2012 at his residence.
He was born January 20, 1924 in Weirton, WV a son of the late Louis A. Snider and Alverda (Schweitzer) Snider Mason.
He retired in 1985 as Principal of Hilltop School following more than 30 years of service in the Martins Ferry School System.
Chuck graduated from Bellaire High School in 1943 where he excelled in basketball. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, having served with the 125th Anti-Aircraft Auxiliary Gun Battalion in Europe.
He was a graduate of West Liberty State College in 1953 and West Virginia University in 1956 with degrees in Education and Administration. He began his teaching career in 1953 at the former Zane Central School and also served as Principal at the former South and Elm Schools.
He was a member of the Colerain Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Trustee. He was also a member of the Martins Ferry Area Historical Society, Belmont County Retired Teachers Association, Life member of the Ohio Education Association, Shadyside Lodge F. & A.M. # 724, Bellaire Alumni Association and West Virginia University Alumni Association, Colerain Senior Citizens where he was a past president, Colerain VFW Post #8848 and AARP.
Chuck had a keen interest in sports; but he also enjoyed following the students in their careers and achievements. A community volunteer, he worked at the annual soap boy derby for many years. Chuck will be greatly miss by his family and many friends.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Boyer, Alverda Iams and Anna Neal.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Betty (Hartline) Snider; two daughters, Leslie (Bill) Withers of Columbus, OH and Lynne (Ray) Swicegood of Galloway, OH; a son, Louis (Tammie) Snider of Erwin, TN; seven grandchildren, Bill and Justin Withers, Kara, Jessica and Jack Swicegood, Nolan and Cali Snider; six great- grandchildren, a niece Evelyn Marling of Bellaire, OH, and a nephew Carl Leroy Boyer of Warren, OH.
Friends will be received Sunday 6-8 p.m. and Monday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH.
Friends will then be received Tuesday, October 9, 2012, from 10 a.m. until time of service at11 a.m. at the Colerain Presbyterian Church, Colerain, OH with Pastor Joe Ellis officiating.
Burial follows at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH.
Masonic Ritualistic Services will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
