FOND OF horseback riding in an era when that was a common means of transportation was Bessie Gatchel, shown in 1922 in Cat Hollow near Barnesville. Her husband, John, worked in a small coal mine, and a large boulder once crushed his dinner pail. Bessie, who had just returned home from Barnesville (about 3 miles away), said that she got on her horse and went back to town for another dinner pail.
