JEFFERS, Woodrow Wilson, 94, of Powhatan Point, Ohio was taken to heaven on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Shadyside Care Center, Shadyside, Ohio.
"Woody" was born January 21, 1918 in Marion, Ohio the son of the late James Blaine Jeffries and Freda Lenora (Cowan) Jeffries. He was raised by his loving aunt and uncle, Effie and John Cowan after the death of his mother, brother George and twin sister Margaret during the 1918 flu epidemic.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years "Libby" Mary Elizabeth (McGuire ) Jeffers, sisters Margaret Belle Jeffers, Catherine "Kate" Bigler, and brothers, George, Phon and Glenn Jeffers.
He was a hero and loving father to his two sons, Larry Jeffers, of Shadyside, Jeff (Theresa) Jeffers and two daughters, Nancy (Jim) Chambers and Cathy (Tom) Carpenter all of Powhatan Point.
Surviving are eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.
Woody was proud to have served his country in the 82nd Airborne during WWII from March 1941 to Sept. 1945, which served in more countries than any other outfit. He served as a "rifleman" in Co. A,, 325TH Glider Infantry Regiment. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, Presidential Citation,
American Campaign Medal, European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 bronze service star and 1 silver service star, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge 1st Award, Honorable Service Award, and Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar,
Woody worked his entire career as a Coal Miner and machinist/mechanic for North American Coal from where he retired .
He left a legacy of the remarkable gift of mechanics to his sons Jeff and Larry. Machines were his passion. Although never educated at a university, he had a remarkable gift that began at a very early age and those who knew him would agree. He also loved the Ohio River, his children, but the love of his life was his wife "Libby".
Family and friends will be received Monday, November 19th 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Crematory, 186 Main Street, Powhatan Point where funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Tuesday with Mr. Tom Carpenter officiating.
Interment follows in Powhatan Cemetery Powhatan Point, Ohio.
The Powhatan Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full Military Graveside Services in Powhatan Cemetery.
