STEUBENVILLE - Big things are expected out of the Bridgeport girls' basketball team this season, and the Lady Bulldogs didn't disappoint in their debut Monday night.
Head coach Rob Zitzelsberger watched him team bolt to a 12-5 lead after one period against host Steubenville Central. That would be the Crusaders' high-point mark as Bridgeport coasted to a 46-12 victory.
Maclaine Murad, a transfer from St. John Central, led the way for the Bulldogs with 14 points, which included an 8-for-8 performance from the charity stripe. Nicole Smolenak added a dozen markers.
Bridgeport tallied 36 rebounds as Murad and freshman Caitlyn Kroll grabbed nine each. Senior Brittany Higgenbotham had half-a-dozen. Smolenak charted seven steals.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over 16 times and shot 14 of 52 from the floor.
Bridgeport travels to Bellaire Thursday.
River 65, Caldwell 32
At Caldwell, the Lady Pilots (2-0) exploded for 30 first-quarter points en route to their impressive victory.
Hayley Bowers and Jensen Caretti each scored 14 points to led four double figure scorers. Cassidy McCullough finished with a dozen, and Lakyn Ramsay added 11.
River led 36-18 off the glass as Leslie Young garnered six boards. Lakyn Ramsay handed out four assists.
The Pilots travel to Buckeye Trail Thursday.
