The Shadyside Tigers dropped their home debut Friday evening, as visiting Shenandoah outpaced the hosts by a 64-56 margin.

Coming off a season-opening win over Bridgeport, the Tigers (1-1) focused on their next opponent, which they matched up with well during the first half. Both teams headed to the midway point, with the Zeps (1-2) edging a 25-24 tally.

The second half though, belonged to Shenadoah's Eli Hurst, who dropped 19 of his 23 markers on the night in the latter half of the contest, while also collecting 11 boards.

"Once he got that first bucket to fall, then he was able to go," Shenandoah head coach Craig Sebring

In basketball, it's always a game of runs and the Tigers came up just one short as they battled back from a double-digit deficit late.

Shadyside was led by big man Austin Dorris, who tallied 16 points on the night, and pulled in 10 rebounds for a double-double on the night.

"Austin (Dorris) plays hard, he always does, what else can you say about the kid. We need the ball to go through his hands to open up our offense." Said Shadyside head coach Ed Andes.

"We moved the ball well at times, but in spurts and not as well as we would have liked to. Our shooters were a little bit out of rhythm because we didn't take advantage of our big man to work the inside out game, which was a part of it." added Andes.

"Skyler (Gibson) also stepped up for us and had a nice game when we needed it at times. We just need a couple more of those guys to step up on both sides of the ball."

The Zeps battled on the boards, and created more turnovers, 15-11, which led to some extra opportunities in this early season prep match up.

"We knew we could play, we just had to disrupt their outside shooters, which fortunately we did tonight, because give it to them, they are a good outside team" Sebring said of his opponents.

"We were working on some new stuff for this game, Shadyside is a big team, so we had to prepare ourselves for that, as well," he continued.

The Zeps received a nice performance from James Luyster who bucketed 13, while collecting 7 boards, and helping offset the size of Shadyside's Dorris somewhat on both ends.

Brandon Farnsworth counted for 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Danny Neuhart and Brett Bond both contributed eight and nine points, respectively.

In the last stanza though, as Shenandoah began to slow down to run some time off, Andes defense began to make some plays as always, to cut the deficit to 4 with under 2 minutes left before they began to send the visitors to the line. Shenandoah prevailed by knocking down a couple late free throws by Farnsworth and Hurst to shut the door.

The Zeps travel to Meadowbrook this evening as they look to even their record. Shadyside heads to Zanesville to meet the Rosecrans on Tuesday, followed by Wheeling Central.

"We have a couple tough road games ahead, which will help us grow early in the season. We're looking forward to the challenge." added Andes.
