Shadyside High School Principal John Haswell has recently taken on an additional role.

Not only will he continue to serve the high school as principal, but will also become the superintendent of the Shadyside School District.

Haswell takes over as superintendent on March 1, when current superintendent, Terry Brinker, is officially retired.

Haswell feels that this move would save the school district money. His contract has not been fully discussed as of right now.

"I have a passion for our school district as well as our community," said Haswell. "I am well aware of the pride and tradition that is engrained in the school and community. I am humbled, yet excited to be a leader of this great school and look forward to working with our community."

Haswell is a native of Shadyside and has been the principal of Shadyside High School since 2010. Before that, Haswell was the assistant principal at Bellaire High School from 2005 to 2010.

Upon graduating from Shadyside High School in 1983, Haswell took a year off to work and save money so he could attend Capital University.

In that year, which he describes as "the best year" as he learned that he didn't want to work in a pizza shop, in construction or for the county, which those were the three jobs he had that year.

He graduated from Capital University in 1988 and started to teach at Shadyside in 1989 as a physical education teacher. He was also coached varsity football, head wrestling coach and has been a track coach. Haswell gave up coaching when he received his administration degree and now attends as many events throughout out the school year, whether it is a girls or boys event.

In 2004, Haswell graduated from Franciscan University with a Masters in Administration. Then in 2009, he received his Superintendent's License from Salem International.

Haswell is married to a Shadyside High graduate, Melanie (Ponzo), who is a teacher at Jefferson Elementary. Together, they have three children that also attend Shadyside schools.

"I look forward to working with the board of education to establish a shared vision as well as relevant goals and objectives and engaging with the school community and general community to move us forward and into the future, keeping the students at the center of our decisions," said Haswell. "I look forward to many years of service to the students and citizens of Shadyside."
