Fire destroys Bellaire home

December 28, 2012
Times Leader

A BELLAIRE home was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.

Chief John Driscoll of the Neffs Volunteer Fire Department said the fire had a good start before firefighters arrived at 341 Anne Ave. around 11:40 p.m. He said flames were shooting through the roof and out of the windows.

The chief said the house was occupied but no one was home at the time of the fire. According to Driscoll, the man took the woman to work. It was reported that the family lost some pets.

"We had a difficult time getting to the house because of the weather conditions," Driscoll said. "One of our firemen twisted his ankle trying to get up over the hill."

He said the fire does not appear to be suspicious but the fire marshal investigators were scheduled to come in to investigate.

Firefighters spent about four hours battling the blaze. Neffs firefighters were assisted by the Brookside Volunteer Fire Department. The Salvation Army canteen was also at the scene.

Neighbors are organizing ways for the community to assist the victims. Cash or check donations can be taken to the Belmont Savings Bank in Bellaire, where a special fund has been set up in the Hicks' Family Fire Fund name.

Clothing is also needed and donations can be left at the BP gas station in Bellaire, which is open 24 hours.

For women, pants sizes 18-20 and shirts and coats size extra large are needed. For men's clothes, pants sizes 18-20 and 38-40 as well as shirts and coats in sizes large and XXL are needed.
