River completed a regular-season sweep of Pioneer Valley Conference rival Monroe Central Thursday night in girls' high school basketball action with a 71-59 victory inside R.L. Potts Gymnasium in Hannibal.
The Pilots (9-2) raced out to a 24-11 lead after eight minutes of action and cruised to a 38-26 edge at the half. An 18-14 scoring edge in the third panel bumped the margin back to 56-40.
Freshman sensation Jensen Caretti knocked down 24 points, while senior Lakyn Ramsay added 18 and classmate Cassidy McCullough had 14. Ramsay's total included a 11-for-16 outing from the charity stripe where the hosts connected on 26 of 42 chances.
Caretti also grabbed nine rebounds, while Emile Weaver took game honors with 11. The Pilots trailed 37-36 off the boards. McCullough charted seven of her team's 15 steals.
Chelsie Roberts continued her scoring prowess with a game-high 25 counters. Amanda Haslam added 11.
River travels across the Ohio River Saturday to meet Magnolia in New Martinsville in a noon JV tip-off.
Barnesville 45, Beallsville 42, OT
At Beallsville, the Shamrocks (4-6) tied the game at the end of regulation of a three-point basket by Marissa Burga, and then outscored the Blue Devils (3-10) by a 9-6 margin in the extra session.
Shaela Markovich led Barnesville with 14 points. Burga finished with 11 points, including another trey in OT, and Miranda Plumly had seven points, but three of them were key free throws in overtime, where the visitors meshed 6 of 12. They were only 9-for-21 for the game.
Michaela Headley had 12 points to pace Beallsville. Kate Kinney added 10 and Maddie Stephen eight. The Blue Devils were 15-for-29 from the charity stripe. Kinney also had 13 of her team's 35 rebounds.
Barnesville hosts Monroe Central Monday. Beallsville is idle until next Thursday when Cameron visits.
St. John Central 66, Cameron 47
At Bellaire, the Irish, with three freshmen in the starting lineup, raced to a 25-9 first-quarter lead en route to a besting of the visiting Dragons inside 'The Greenhouse'.
Freshman Jessica Alvey led the way for SJC with a career-high 21 points. Senior ace Kristen Russell netted 20 markers, while frosh Marissa Rose donated 17 counters.
Neely Benline led Cameron with 15 points.
St. John Central is now 8-4 and will visit Paden City Saturday.
SJC won the prelim as Coach Erin Nicola jayvees got 13 points from Emily LeMasters.
Martins Ferry 59, Edison 37
At Richmond, the Purple Riders scored a repeat victory over the homestanding Buckeye 8 rival Wildcats.
Martins Ferry led 30-15 at the half and never looked back in posting the decisive win.
Senior Jessica Kinney continued to light up scoreboards as she poured in 23 points. Tyrah King added eight and Dionna Lee seven. Meghan Rose chipped in six.
However, the Purple was a miserable 4-for-17 from the foul line.
Martins Ferry is back in action Saturday when it meets Pickerington Central at 4 p.m. in the championship game of the MPR Industry United Dairy Martins Ferry girls holiday tournament.
Indian Creek 45, St. Clairsville 37
At Wintersville, the host Redskins (6-4) built a 5-point lead after one quarter and held off the Red Devils (5-5) in Buckeye 8 action.
Alexis St. Clair led the visitors with 16 points. Carlee Gillespie chipped in a dozen.
Bre Merryman led Indian Creek with 18 points.
St. Clairsville hosts Union Local Monday.
