When a season is falling below expectations, most every coach claims his team is better than its record would indicate.

Beallsville's Rick Jarrett may have made a case for that argument Monday night as his Lady Blue Devils handed a 15-point loss to the Lady Irish of St. John Central in the Greenhouse, 69-54.

Coming into the contest with a 4-11 season mark, Jarrett felt his team had been in several close contests playing a schedule which he describes as "upped."

"Of those losses, I would say six to eight were close, within three to seven points; but we felt that if we could put together a complete four quarters of quality basketball, we could compete with anyone on our schedule."

St. John and Beallsville would play a close contest through most of the first half with the Irish leading 14-11 at the first buzzer.

It remained a see-saw struggle and with under a minute left in the second quarter, the score was again knotted at 27.

The Blue Devils would take a slight advantage into the intermission 30-28, outpointing the home team, 19-14, in the second stanza.

The visitors went on a bit of a run in the third quarter, dropping the green team into an eight-point hole. St. John, however, got some rhythm and began executing on both ends of the court to battle back within a single bucket, 44-42.

Irish freshman Lindsey Froehlich drew a foul and went to the line with a chance to get even but her second shot would bounce out and that would be as close as the Irish would come.

The Blue Devils took the rebound and added six more to their total making it 50-43 going into the final frame.

"Defensively, we did what we could to take them out of their game," Jarrett added. "We tried to utilize our players who were 'feeling it' on offense."

Beallsville would cap an 8-0 run to begin the fourth period and sparked by Katey Kinney's 10 points, outscored their hosts 19-11 to account for the final lighting.

"St. John's is a good team and we had a couple players injured," Jarrett commented. "This was a total team effort, whether it was someone stepping over to cut off a dribble, hustling to grab a loose ball or making a play. Everyone stepped up and contributed."

"Give Beallsville credit. They outplayed us in every phase of the game," St. John Central veteran skipper Bubba Kapral said. "They owned the boards and they pressured us well.

"Beallsville really hurt us with countless transition buckets," Kapral added. "It was as bad as we have played in many, many years."

Kinney paced the Blue Devils with a double-double, scoring a game high 32 points and adding 15 of Beallsville's 34 team rebounds.

Maddie Stephen went another direction for her double-double, distributing 11 assists and tallying 12 points including a six-of-six outing at the charity stripe.

Mikaela Headley added 13 points as the Blue Devils shot 23-of-57 from the floor and netted 23-of-36 foul shooting.

Froehlich would lead the Lady Irish with a double-double, dropping in 14 points including a six-of-eight outing at the penalty stripe to go with 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Freshman Marissa Rose tallied 13 points. Kaydie Coppa added 11 points for St. John's, including the game's only three-point bucket.

St. John Central committed 33 turnovers to just 13 miscues for Beallsville.

Beallsville improves to five wins and will travel to take on rival Monroe Central Thursday evening while the Irish fall to 10-6 and will visit Weirton Madonna on Saturday.
