Shadyside girls, River boys post impressive wins

Shadyside's Lady Tigers went down to the wire with invading University High Saturday afternoon in Tigertown.

The LT's mounted a seven-point fourth quarter lead before holding on for a 64-62 victory over the Lady Hawks.

Coach Tina Yates' team led 18-17 after one period before expanding the count to 35-30 at halftime. The West Virginia-based visitors battled back to forge a 46-46 deadlock after three panels.

Shadyside's backcourt combo of Karli Bonar and Hayley Holenka combined for 43 points with Bonar netting a game-leading 24 tallies. Bonar's production included eight buckets from three-point land.

Holenka hooped 19 counters, including s 12-of-15 performance from the foul line. Junior Toni Andes also came up big for the Orange, registering 13 points, including a pair of long-distance connections.

St. John Central took to the road Saturday afternoon and pocketed a 40-35 triumph over Caldwell.

The win was the 13th in 19 starts for the Lady Irish.

Senior ace Kristen Russell led the Green with 14 points while Marissa Rose netted 13 counters. Lindsey Froehlich donated seven points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Lexy Schell paced the Lady Redskins with 11 points while Jennifer Leasure chipped in with 8 lightings.

Fort Frye 56, Monroe Central 46

AT WOODSFIELD, the host Lady Seminoles fell behind by a 18-9 count after one and could never recover in falling, 56-46 to talented Fort Frye Saturday evening.

The Lady Seminoles got within five entering the fourth, but could never get over the hump.

The Lady Cadets were led by talented senior Taylor Buchanon's 18 and Megan Liedtke's 12.

Monroe Central was paced by Chelsie Roberts' 16 and Chelsie Tewanger's 14.

St. Clairsville 71, Barnesville 46

AT St. Clairsville, the Lady Red Devils pulled away for a decisive victory over invading Barnesville.

Lauren Figura led a well-balanced scoring attack for the winners, netting 15 points. Alexis St. Clair chipped in with a 14-point outing and Carly Gillespie contributed a dozen lightings. Brigee Mick brought down seven rebounds for the Saints.

East Richland Christian 42, Parkers. Christian 36

Hannah Stephens scored 15 points, Alyssa Crowley tallied 10, and Hannah Surface netted nine in the Lady Lions' victory.

ERC trailed 14-11 after one panel and 21-20 at halftime. The West Virginians took a 30-28 upperhand to the final period.

BOYS

River 71, Shadyside 38

River continued its fine play Saturday evening with an impressive 71-38 repeat victory against Shadyside in Hannibal.

The Pilots jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one and never looked back. They outscored the Tigers, who didn't have a player reach double figures, 19-9 in the second and 22-13 in the third.

River, which buried nine 3-point goals, was led by senior Cody Caldwell who had 22 points and eight rebounds. Senior standout Brett Price finished with 19. Jordan Indermuhle added 10.

Shadyside was led by Ryan Richardson and Austin Dorris, who each had six.

River is on the road at Buckeye Trail Tuesday evening.

Toronto 65, St. John 37

The St. John Central boys watched Toronto outscore them 35-15 in the middle two period and go on for a convincing 65-37 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Irish were led by Jonathan Bossell and Kolin Melko, who scored eight points each. D.J. Shoemaker added seven.
