HANNIBAL The inter-district battle between Switzerland of Ohio schools River and Monroe Central was a typical battle between rival schools until the third quarter when the host Pilots ran away with the contest, burying the Seminoles by a final of 73-49.
River's Brett Price and Cody Caldwell had the hot hands for the hosts as Price netted a pair of first quarter treys scoring 10 in the opener while Caldwell added his own long-range contribution giving the Pilots a double digit lead.
The Seminoles' Korey Lafferre netted a buzzer-beater just before the intermission to outscore River 19-18 in the second stanza but the invaders still trailed, 37-29.

Monroe Central came out in the third quarter and narrowed the gap to just six points at 39-33 and had an opportunity to close it on the next possession but missed the lay up and the Pilots grabbed the rebound.
"They went to the diamond and one defense and Matt Marconi stepped it up and took control," said River head coach Mark Romick. "He was able to get open and get some big shots up there for us."
Two minutes later it was 48-33 as River went on a 9-0 run. "I thought we had a chance to respond, there were opportunities there," said Monroe Central's head coach Scooter Tolzda. "We just did not capitalize on them."
The run would put the Pilots up to stay as the starch went out of the Seminoles as the hosts entered the final frame leading 56-38.
"We had trouble scoring, we had trouble rebounding and grabbing the ball," Tolzda added. "That is a good combination to get you beat by 20 points."
Price paced the Pilots with 29 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Caldwell and Marconi both added a bakers dozen with 13 lightings,
"Brett shot it really well tonight, he made good shot selections," commented Romick. "He is a hard fellow to guard."
Caldwell pulled down eight caroms and Marconi pilfered five dribbles for River. The Pilots were 25 of 62 action shots with 40 rebounds and 12 turnovers.
The Seminoles would get a 10-spot from Kordell Antill and Lafferre. Brian Duffy had six of Monroe Central's 25 rebounds. The 'Noles shot 18 of 50 from the floor and committed 23 turnovers.
River improves to 15-5 while the Seminoles drop to 12-9. The two teams will meet again next Wednesday for a PVC showdown, "Scooter will come back ready with something to try and surprise us," Romick predicted. "It will be a dogfight."
