Ohio girls’ tourney begins second week

February 18, 2013
By KIM NORTH - Times Leader Sports Writer (knorth@timesleaderonline.com) , Times Leader

The road to the 2013 Ohio girls' state basketball tournament has already been traveled, and several local teams have already cleared the first pothole en route to the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in mid-March.

Barnesville, Harrison Central, Martins Ferry and Shadyside all passed their first-round tests, but as everyone knows, the further you travel through the post-season, the tougher the opponents get.

Barnesville and Shadyside will meet in Division IV sectional tournament action Thursday inside 'The Hangar' at Union Local High School in Morristown. A berth to the district tourney at New Philadelphia High School will be on the line.

The Shamrocks defeated St. John Central Saturday, while the battle-tested Tigers rolled past Caldwell earlier that same day. Shadyside has ruled this bracket for the past three years.

In D-III action in Cambridge, the Purple Riders will take on state-ranked Fort Frye Thursday. That victor also advances to district action at Steubenville High School's Crimson Center.

Meanwhile, in D-III action at Dover High School, Harrison Central will tangle with Indian Valley Thursday, with that winner also moving on to district action.

In action tonight at Morristown, state-ranked Bridgeport meets Beallsville in the 6 p.m. lid-lifter, with River and Frontier squaring off at 8.

Those two winners will collide Thursday for a right to advance to the district tournament. The Lady Pilots have made two straight appearances to the next level.

Also on tap for Tuesday is a pair of D-II girls' sectional finals at Union Local. Carrollton and Steubenville meet at 6 p.m., with Indian Creek and Minerva squaring off in the 8 p.m. nightcap.

On Tuesday, St. Clairsville will make its first tournament appearance when the Red Devils go at it with West Muskingum at 6 p.m. in D-III action in Cambridge. In the nightcap, Union Local and Monroe Central will do battle. Those two winners return to Guernsey County for a 1 p.m. tilt Saturday. That survivor will be district-bound.

WHO GOES WHERE?

The Rose family - Mike and Jenny - had some difficult decisions to make this season.

They had two girls playing on two different teams. Meghan is a senior point guard at Martins Ferry, while Marissa was a freshman point guard for St. John Central.

The Purple Riders and Irish basically played on the same nights, leaving the parents with tough decisions. However, while attending some of those games, I did see both in attendance. It helped that Martins Ferry did away with its JV schedule, which allowed the varsity games to tip at 6 p.m. in some instances.

However, with Martins Ferry and St. John Central both advancing to the recent Wheeling Hospital OVAC Girls Championships two weekends ago at Ohio University Eastern, it made the Rose's scheduling a lot easier.

MAY-DAY

Shadyside's Lauren May made her first appearance in more than two years when she took the court Saturday against Caldwell. The senior, who has battled injuries most of her career, scored a basket while giving Tina Yates' team some quality minutes off the bench.

ON THE MARK

Barnesville freshman Shayla Markovich made her first high school post-season contest one to remember. The post player scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down a game-best 13 rebounds in the Shamrocks' victory over St. John Central.

HONORS KEEP COMING

Shadyside's Karli Bonar continues to reap the benefits of an outstanding senior season.

She was named JJ Huddle's Player of the Week last week.

Bonar is headed to the University of Findlay to continue her academic and athletic careers.

She also was named to the Ohio North-South All-Star Game during Sunday's District 12 meeting in Cambridge. The remainder of the teams will be announced at a later date.

Enjoy the games!
