MARTINS FERRY - Never let it be said that a woman's love of shopping doesn't yield positive results.
That's the tale that Jen Ticarich is telling when asked about what drove her to go into business for herself and open 'This N That' Thrift store at 612 N. Zane Highway in Martins Ferry.
Ticarich had been working as a dealer at Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack when she was forced to have surgery on her arm.
The injury and subsequent recovery from surgery made dealing blackjack a painful proposition, so a new path was needed.
She explained she has a love of shopping and has quite a knack at finding great bargains.
"I know how to get great deals and I wanted to be able to share that with the public and offer them quality goods at great prices."
In less than a month, Ticarich had inquired about the vacant property at 621 N. Zane Highway, signed her lease and began stocking her shelves and racks with items for her store.
'This N That' is a thrift store and also a consignment shop.
Ticarich explained she does offer an assortment of men's, women's and children's clothing, as well as shoes, hats and the usual assortment of accessories you'd find at a consignment shop.
But she also carries toys, tools and other household items for a variety of items.
'This N That' is open seven days a week; Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The store will be closed on all holidays.
For now, Ticarich is a one-woman operation and with 60 hours of open time every week, she'll be logging long hours to ensure her business takes off.
Ticarich held a grand opening ceremony Saturday, opening at 9 a.m. and serving light refreshments for all those who attended.
She's also running a promotion all this upcoming week. Every customer who makes a purchase gets a ticket for a chance at a drawing to win an Easter basket, fully outfitted with plenty of candy and items to excite any child on Easter morning.
The drawing will be Saturday at noon and the winner need not be present to claim their prize.
For now, 'This N That' only accepts cash payments but Ticarich noted that may change in the future. Like other consignment shops in the area, Ticarich is willing to put aside items for a few days for customers who may have found the item they are looking for but are still a few days away from payday.
