AMARILLO, Tex. - Nate Davis fired five touchdown passes Saturday night in leading Amarillo to a 62-34 victory over New Mexico in Lone Star Football League action on Coors Lite Field inside the Amarillo Civic Center.
The defending champion Venom didn't waste any time in jumping ahead of the expansion Stars (1-1) as Raymond Johnson took the opening kickoff and returned it for a touchdown.
Davis, a Bellaire High and Ball State University performer, completed 16 of 25 passes for 154 yards. He connected with five different receivers on scoring strikes, while not being intercepted or sacked.
FORMER BELLAIRE quarterback Nate Davis (8) tossed five TD passes Saturday night in leading Amarillo a 62-34 Lone Star Football League victory over New Mexico.
In addition, Davis ran four times for 46 yards. He found the end zone on a 5-yard sprint and had a long carry of 30 yards.
Davis found Ron Evans Jr. on a 30-yard TD in the first quarter. He then connected with Jared Williams on a 6-yard strike with 21 seconds left in the first half. A 9-yard hookup with Johnson in the third quarter preceded a pair of fourth-quarter six-pointers to Anthony Clark (24 yds.) and Alex Watson (3 yds.) finished his fine night.
"I feel we did a good job as an offense and defense," Davis said on the Venom's website. "But we've still got a lot of work to do. We left a lot of points out there. I missed a lot of throws and missed some reads."
Amarillo is off this week before heading to Abilene to meet the Bombers.
"We're not taking any time off," Davis said. "We had our time off. The off-season was our time off. We are not going to 100 percent every day, but we are going to practice every day. We are still going to be together, and still be on the same page, just so we don't lose anything."
