THE PROVIDENT Coal Company was one of 21 mines operating in 1920 within a radius of eight miles of St. Clairsville. It became the Clarkson Coal Co., in this location in the early 1920's. It employed 500-600 men, many of whom walked to work from St. Clairsville and the surrounding areas. The coal was brought out of the mine by mules. Clarkson Coal Co. was sold to the Sioux Railroad but was unsuccessful in its operation so the mine was closed in 1930. - Jessie Pollock - 1920. Submitted by Wayne Rinkes
