SHADYSIDE- Pay hikes for village council members, the board of public affairs and the mayor were approved Monday night by Shadyside Village Council.

Councilman John Tipton told council that under the Ohio Revised Code, the salaries of elected officials can either be increased or diminished, and there are timelines that go along with this rule as well.

"It was the consensus of the finance committee that the pay for the council members, board of public affairs and the mayor has not been raised in years, since the late '80s, early '90's," said Tipton. "We are proposing that we bring legislation in to increase the salary to $600 for council and board of public affairs and $800 for the mayor."

Jeryl McGaffick, fiscal officer for Shadyside council, said that this increase will hurt the general fund.

Members of the finance committee assured council that they are exploring other avenues of income.

With a 3-1 vote, a motion was approved for the pay of council, board of public affairs and the mayor to be increased. The increases will be effective at the start of next term, Jan. 1, 2014.

Street Commissioner Jay Meek wanted to thank those involved in writing the grant application for the new leaf box from the JB Green Team. This summer, alleys will be reconditioned and blacktop will be laid.

Council members wished to make it known that they are looking for staff for the Shadyside pool. All positions are open.

The next council meeting will be moved to Wednesday, April 24, at 6:30. The change was made because of Solicitor Thomas Ryncarz's schedule.
