Taste Buds: Old South Bar-be-que

Powhatan mobile unit ‘Smokin’ the Good Stuff’

April 11, 2013

Geesh! Sick of what seemed like the longest winter EVER, the Buds have been patiently (not really) waiting for the weather to break. Late last week, it finally happened and the Buds rejoiced.

In fact, they are STILL rejoicing. Yay for flip flops! Yay for outdoor running and walking! Yay for cropped pants and open-toe shoes. Giddy, giddy, giddy are the Buds.

Tired of being cooped-up in the office for months, the foodie duo decided there was only one way to properly celebrate: by hitting up a mobile barbecue stand. And just in time, an alert coworker announced that there was a yellow food truck setting up in Powhatan with a line of hungry folks eager to order. With no delay, the Buds hit the road down Rt. 7 following the tantalizing scent of smoking meats. Much to their delight, the trail ended at the Old South Bar-be-que.

Bud Em had been lucky enough to experience their delicious food a few years ago and she just KNEW that rookie Bud Shaunna was in for a treat!

Located at the crossroads of Rt. 7 and Rt. 148, the Old South Bar-be-que operates from a mobile unit with picnic tables and a large smoker outside. The barbecue offers an impressive selection of baby back ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, 1/2 chickens, smoked sausage and beef brisket that are slow cooked southern style. Patrons can get the meat of their choice in sandwich or platter form. For those who can't decide what to order, the eatery offers a Triple Meat Combo (a.k.a. "The I don't know what I want plate") which includes beef brisket, pulled pork, ribs, baked beans and coleslaw.

Another unique feature is that customers can select their own sauce from a choice of sweet, mild, spicy, spicy mustard and E. Carolina vinaigrette barbecue sauces. Oh yeah - and the sauce? It happens to be homemade by the folks at Old South, making it extra special.

Bud Em, having tried their yummy brisket on the last visit, opted for the jumbo pulled chicken sandwich with sides of both baked beans and coleslaw and a soda which all came to $8 bucks. The very generous portion of smoked chicken was tender and perfectly cooked, the seasoning spices adding a wonderful smoky kick. Adding a drizzle of the mild sauce, the sandwich was a knock-out for sure.

Bud Shaunna decided to give the pulled pork a whirl, opting to top it with the sweet sauce. She ordered the junior sized sandwich and also got sides of beans and coleslaw which brought her order to $4.50. Overwhelmed with the deliciousness of it, she devoured every morsel, and raved that the lean and tender pork was the bomb! Both Buds also thoroughly enjoyed the fresh and crisp coleslaw and the sweet baked beans.

With full, happy bellies, the Buds regretted having to leave the Old South Bar-be-cue but found solace in the fact that the barbecue season is just getting heated up. They look forward to making more trips to the mobile eatery in the months to come, as should all of you!
