TOFAUTE, Thomas P., 84, of Medford Lakes, NJ, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2013, with family and friends by his side.
Tom is survived by his son, Mike Tofaute of Medford Lakes and brothers, Jay (Priscilla) Tofaute, Parkersburg, WV, and John (Kathie) Tofaute, Bluffton, SC; sisters-in-law, Ginnie (Jim) Tofaute, Statesville, NC and Norma (Bill) Tofaute, Sunset Beach, NC; countless nieces and nephews; great friends, Mary and Ang Albano, Bob Backer, Dick Stahl, Peggy Mueller, Gordon Galtere, Peggy (the late Kiki) Konstantinos and many more dear friends, including the infamous "Library Crew."
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Olga Tofaute and siblings, Kay (Chuck) Hagen, Peg (Jim) DeMuth, Jim (Dolores) Tofaute, and Bill (Freddie) Tofaute.
Tom was born on August 9, 1928 in Wheeling, WV to Henry and Kathryn Tofaute.
Tom was an outstanding student/athlete at Yorkville (OH) High School, excelling in football, basketball and baseball. After honorably serving our nation in the Marines, Tom accepted a football scholarship to North Carolina State University where he Lettered all four years; earning All Southern Conference Honorable Mention and Honorable All American honors and was drafted by both the Chicago Cardinals and Montreal Alouettes, choosing to play for the Alouettes in the Canadian Football League.
Tom and his family moved to NJ in 1963 after his professional football career was cut short due to injuries. He was hired as the Burlington City High School assistant head football coach and teacher and assumed the head football coach position in 1967, until Shawnee High School was opened in 1969. Tom accepted the first Shawnee Renegades head coaching position and relocated to Medford Lakes. There is no one more responsible for the foundation of tremendous success of Shawnee athletics than Tom Tofaute. Over the next 22 years, Tom served as Head Football Coach, Head Track Coach, Athletic Director and Vice Principal at Shawnee High School. Mr. Tofaute left an indelible mark on South Jersey athletics recognized by his Coach of the Year Awards for 1968 and 1971 and election to the Shawnee High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the South Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991. Tom Tofaute's legacy lives on in the countless student/athlete lives he touched during his incredible life.
A graveside service will be held in Wheeling, WV at a later date; however, donations may be made in Tom's memory to the animal shelter of your choice.
