BARNESVILLE-Cutting class at Barnesville Middle School Friday will be encouraged -- as long as the students are participating in the second annual "Cutting Class for a Cure" cancer walk.
For a minimum donation of $1 per period, students will be able to "cut" class and walk laps in the gymnasium in honor or memory of friends or family members affected by cancer.
Event coordinators Lori Witchey and Bev McConnell say that all walkers can register to win door prizes, and there will also be a Chinese auction with the winners announced at the end of the day. Some of this year's 30 prizes include Ohio State football tickets, Washington "Wild Things" tickets, an autographed photo of Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu, pool passes, student athletic passes, gift cards and gift baskets donated by the middle school staff.
Last year Barnesville Middle School students cut classes for donations and raised more than $4,000 for cancer support services. Friends, families and survivors are welcome to participate in this year’s “Cutting Class for a Cure” walk this Friday.
Honor and memory declarations will be available again this year for $1 each and will be showcased in the school hallway. There will also be a special lap around the gym for those who have won the fight against the disease, and all survivors are invited to participate.
Last year the event more than doubled previous years' efforts, raising $4,004.80 for Barnesville's 3 C's Cancer Support Group, which provides funds for gasoline, hotel stays, meals, groceries and other items not covered by insurance for patients in treatment and their family members.
"We'd like to thank staff and students for the time, effort and money donated to the walk," adds Witchey, who organized last year's event because of her own experience with cancer. "It is difficult to put into words how much we appreciate the overwhelming responses."
The event is open to the public, beginning with an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m. Barnesville Middle School is located at 970 Shamrock Dr. For more information, contact Witchey at Witchey at email@example.com or 425-3116 x 4111; or Bev McConnell at firstname.lastname@example.org or 425-3116 x 4115.
