MARTINS FERRY The fire department will hold its annual memorial service May 5 at the Memorial Monument. The public is invited to support the city's oldest and finest volunteer organization. After a breakfast for fire department members and city administrators at the Ladder Station, the department will participate in St. Mary's Church service. Fire Chief Jack Regis noted that the departments rotate to a different church every year.

After the service, firefighters will assemble at the monument in the park to commemorate all deceased volunteers. Special recognition this year will go to Roger Gildow and Gino Reynolds, who passed away last May. Their names will be added to the monument's engravings. Regis noted the memorial service has become significant to the department and community, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of the organization's members.

Among the department's projects is a mission to raise $25-$30,000 for added enhancements to the existing monument. Plans include a memorial walk, a wall and a separate monument topped with a bronze firefighter's helmet and engraved with the names of all past fire chiefs. Cost of the helmet would be about $9,000.

So far, they have received a grant for $500 from Wal-Mart and some small private donations.

"We have quite a ways to go," Regis said. "With all the other improvements at the city park, this will only improve the park. It will give our monument the same distinction as all the war monuments."

Anyone is welcome to make a contribution. Corporate or private donations are accepted and can be sent to the fire department at PO box 68.
