MARTINS FERRY The annual sky show fireworks display sponsored by the Martins Ferry Chamber of Commerce will be held the eve of Independence Day, July 3 at the new school complex. This is the 24th year of the chamber sponsoring the event.

Dorothy Powell, executive director of the Martins Ferry Chamber of Commerce, said the event will feature the usual assortment of food vendors and entertainment for all ages. Extreme Entertainment will again provide inflatable rides for small children, while musical entertainment will include Dr. Dan Jones and The Special Group to perform a versatile mix of music.

"They have always enjoyed the music. The kids enjoy inflatables," she said. "I think everybody leaves the hilltop with a good feeling."

The school complex has hosted the sky show event since 2008. The wide-open grassy area has suited the festivities. The two shelters are also popular. Powell added that the fireworks display is visible across the valley and has been seen by spectators across the river and on the river.

"We've always had a tremendous crowd there at the new school complex," said Powell, adding that the move to the school location has been a benefit to the celebration. "At first there were concerns it would not work out, but it has turned out to be a super event."

Fireworks are provided by Pyrotechnics by Presutti, who have lit up the night for the past 23 years. The show is typically 25 minutes long. Powell noted the usual attendance at the sky show is about 1,000.

"I think it'll be a great evening. It has so far," she said.

The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the sky show itself will commence at dusk. VIP parking will be offered for $10 and can be obtained at the chamber office prior to the show or at the gate that evening.

Parking is free and donations are accepted. The rain date is July 5.

For more information, contact the chamber office at (740) 633-2565. Hours are 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Powell added that summer will be a busy time for the city. The soap box derby is set for June 9 on Hanover Street at 10 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m.
