SHADYSIDE - The Fifth Annual Shadyside Loop Festival will be held on June 14 and 15. The opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.

The Central Avenue "LOOP" will be closed for the festival beginning 3 p.m. on Friday and will re-open after midnight on Saturday. Traffic will be re-routed for both north and south-bound lanes.

The opening ceremony will be held on the main stage on Central Avenue with a memorial ceremony and balloon release for the 26 victims of the "Flood of Tears," which happened on June 14, 1990, and for all the alumni who have passed away.

"We are going to have our opening ceremony with a tribute to the flood victims that died 23 years ago from Friday," said Councilman Tim Merryman. "We are going to release balloons right after the service. Each balloon will have 26 tears, each tear representing someone that died during the flood."

The car show will be held on June 14, with trophies passed out at 8 p.m. The motorcycle show will be held on June 15 beginning at 6 p.m. and trophies will also be given out at 8 p.m.

Both nights will have entertainment from 6 to 10 p.m. The band "White Collar Criminals" will kick off Friday's entertainment and on Saturday night, the Shadyside Community Band will perform and then Joseph Mastracci & Macy Coffland will take the stage from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

There will be activities for all ages including face painting and balloon animals. There will be various games to play as well as giant inflatable rides and attractions including a rock wall from All Year Sports. Barb Feher and Helen Bundorf will be presenting over 100 years of memorabilia about Shadyside including photos, antiques, glassware and nostalgia in the Community Building on both nights.

Food, arts and craft booths, displays, memorabilia, and other vendors will be featured along the LOOP area and are to register prior to the event with Marcia Soos at the Mayor's office at 676-5972. Vendors must report to the Information Booth at Central Avenue and 39th St. for their designated locations. A commemorative "LOOP" Festival t-shirt will be available for sale at the information booth.

The LOOP will undergo extensive construction from the Carry-Out to the Fire Department beginning in July or August of this year, according to architect Danny Popp of DDP and Associates. Shadyside received a grant from ODOT for traffic enhancement to upgrade the street lights, sidewalks, crosswalks, and provide coordinating sight furnishings. Memorial pavers will be sold to help construct a memorial in honor of Miss Pauline Swamberg, a Shadyside teacher who left an endowment for the betterment and beautification of the village.
