SMITH, Jean Miller

SMITH, Jean Miller, of Flushing, Ohio passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 12, 2013.

Jean was with her family at the Cumberland Pointe Care Center in St. Clairsville, Ohio at the time of her passing. She was 85 years old.

Jean was born in Barnesville, Ohio on May 29, 1928.

She was a 1946 graduate of Flushing High School. As a student, she was known for her hook shot and taught several of the boys how to throw a football left-handed.

She was a member of the Flushing United Methodist Church.

She retired in 1993 after 23 years of working for the U.S. Postal Service. For several years, she was the rural mail carrier for the Flushing-Holloway-Piedmont area. She had a soft spot for animals and always had special treats in her car for the pets she encountered on her route.

She taught her grand children how to play basketball and was an avid fan of tennis and golf. She loved spending time with her family and was known for her terrific sense of humor. She had many fond memories of trips that she took with her sisters.

She is survived by her four children, Janie (Rod) Hildreth of St. Clairsville, Ohio; Nancy (Dale) Bowers of Martinsburg, West Virginia; Dan (Lisa) Smith of Zanesville, Ohio and David (Cathy) Smith of Flushing, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Chris, Matt and Jim Hildreth, Laura Bowers Vargas, Ben Bowers, Ryan Smith, Casey Smith Utter, Jamie Smith, Jessica, Adam and Brittany Smith; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jane Bell of Coatesville, Indiana and a brother, Ed Miller of Gahanna, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel W. Smith; her parents, Otis and Beulah Frost Miller; her brother, Warren Miller, and her sister, Doris Taylor.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Wayne Ickes and Rev. David Powell officiating.

Burial will immediately follow in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing.

Memorial donations may be made to The Flushing United Methodist Church or the Belmont County Animal Shelter.
