Sometimes the Buds yearn for a change of scenery, especially when summer hits full swing and the weather is beautiful.

Late last week, a light workload and a sunny day came together creating the perfect opportunity for us to make the trek up scenic US 250 to dine at the Tappan Lake Marina.

As it turns out, lunch at the Boathouse Bar & Grill overlooking the sprawling lake was just the getaway the Buds were looking for.

Crab Cake Dinner

Located at 33315 Dennison-Cadiz Road, the Boathouse serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner every day beginning at 8 a.m.

Their breakfast options include all the usual suspects: eggs, omelets, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy with various combinations available. While they all sounded quite tasty, the Buds were in the mood for dinner food.

The menu boasts a bevy of yummy sounding appetizers of all sorts such as mozzarella sticks, buffalo chicken dip (hello!), Tappan fries, calamari, fried green beans, wings and even an assortment of cheese and trail bologna. The items ranged from $3.79 for the boatload basket of fresh cut fries to $11.99 for the Overboard Platter. As tempting as they all sounded, the Buds opted to be good and skip the apps and go straight to the meal.

Bud Em - in a rare move - deviated from her typical chicken/turkey tendencies and ordered the taco salad. The salad is made with choice of grilled chicken or seasoned beef, lettuce, black olives, onion, tomato, shredded cheddar and tortilla chips and is served with salsa and sour cream on the side.

The salad, which rang in at $8.59, proved to be a good choice. Made from iceberg lettuce - as taco salads typically are - the veggies were fresh, crisp and plentiful. The taco meat was seasoned nicely and the presentation was just lovely. Bud Em ate it up! And just for fun she got an order of sweet potato fries on the side that both Buds enjoyed.

At first, Bud Shaunna was slightly distracted gazing out the window at the fantastic view of the lake - but really, with the open layout and large windows in the dining area, every seat was the best in the house! She reminisced of times as a young Bud, when Daddy Bud took her and Sister Bud to Tappan Lake to fish, skip rocks and eat at the marina. Ah, memories!

But on to the business at hand. Being inspired by the water, Bud Shaunna chose the crabcake dinner. For $9.99, two crabcakes are served with red pepper mayo and two side items - Bud S picked cole slaw and onion rings. The crabcakes were browned on the outside, were very soft inside, and had a good taste. The red pepper mayo served as a nice compliment, although Bud Shaunna was admittedly hoping for a bit more zing. The creamy cole slaw was fresh and crisp, and the onion rings were divine. It was quite a filling meal, leaving Bud Shaunna feeling like she could float out of the restaurant on one of the boats docked below.

On the way out, the Buds grabbed a flier listing the Boathouse's calendar of summer events. Some of the activities on tap include fireworks at dusk on July 6; summer wine tasting on July 27 at 7 p.m.; Tappan Lake community luau on Aug. 3 at 7 p.m.; a chili cookoff on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.; and a Halloween party on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. Call 740-269-2031 or visit tappanlakemarina.com for more information.
