ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Amy Savage has been serving her customers out of her Washington, Pa. based Oil and Gas Safety Supply store for 18 months.

But at the request of those customers, Savage opted to open a second location ... this one closer to the Utica Shale play action here in Ohio.

That's a hallmark of Savage's business approach; not only listening to her customers but acting on their suggestions.

And it's that personal touch that sets Oil and Gas Safety Supply apart from its competitors.

Her store is a one-stop shop for the oil and gas workers operating locally and the companies they work for.

She carries a full line of gear, from hard hats to boots, reflective flame-resistant clothing ... you name it, Savage's shop at 47445 National Rd. in St. Clairsville has it.

Savage has all the popular brands. But she also has her own line, Oil and Gas Safety Supply, that is literally designed with the oil and gas worker in mind.

She wanted to be able to offer an affordable, yet functional line of clothing to her customers.

In effort to meet their demands, she went to the source and solicited opinions from the workers themselves.

"I asked them what do they like, what type of fit, what type of cut ... and designed it based on what the worker needed and made it come in at a price that they liked," Savage said.

Savage says that her business is roughly half-and-half, those who stick with brand loyalty and those who've tried and like her line of gear. But word of mouth is spreading and more and more workers are converting to the Oil and Gas Safety Supply brand, one designed specifically with their needs in mind.

She's also excited about a winter line of clothing coming out later this year, including flame-resistant clothing in black, something nearly impossible to get a hold of previously because of issues in dyeing the fabric. The winter gear will be lined with fleece to help keep workers warm on the marathon work sessions in the winter cold.

The company's website is located at www.oilandgassafetysupply.com. It's functional now, but Savage is having a company give it a full update to allow her customers to show her entire catalog and place orders from the comfort of their homes.

She is also focusing on her own line of work gloves and steel-toe boots to offer under the umbrella of her clothing line. Again, she's soliciting the opinions of the workers to put together the perfect apparel.

A Michigan native, Savage noted the warm reception she's received locally, both from customers and businesses she deals with in a work capacity, as well as on a personal level.

And she works to return the favor,.

Oil and Gas Safety Supply's store also offers a litany of unique gifts and industry-related items for its customers, from the "Hillbilly Proud" line of clothing manufactured in West Virginia to custom decals, hardhat stickers and other assorted giftware. Her stickers she sells are designed, made and embroidered locally.

While not specifically targeted, Savage does have a full line of gear available to local coal miners.

They carry the belts, hats, bibs, boots, the low-profile helmets. You name it, Savage carries it.

Mining customers are only a small portion of Savage's total business, as word spreads around, that percentage is sure to grow.

"We are a one-stop shop for companies," Savage said, adding that individuals seeking additional gear or established companies looking to resupply can find everything they need under one roof. The store is even able to fully outfit the transportation trucks with all the necessary equipment.

She even has welding supplies.

Thus far, Savage's top-selling items are the custom-designed oil and gas safety helmets that are made in New York.

Oil and Gas Safety Supply is open Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m and can be reached by calling (740)

"The industry never sleeps so we want to be open every day of the week and as long as possible to accommodate our customers," Savage said.
